The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an intergovernmental organisation headquartered in Abu Dhabi, mandated to promote the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy in the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity. IRENA’s mission is to play a leading role in the ongoing transformation of the global energy systems as a centre of excellence for knowledge and innovation, a global voice of renewable energy, a network hub for all stakeholders and a source of advice and support for countries. At present, IRENA has 164 Members (163 States and the European Union) that acceded to its Statute, and 21 additional States in the process of accession and actively engaged.
IRENA has a strong focus on the energy transition developing country members and small island developing states (SIDS). IRENA’s Country Engagement and Partnerships Division (CEP) coordinates and facilitates the activities of the SIDS Lighthouses Initiative. Launched at the 2014 Climate Summit, the Initiative provides a global framework to support SIDS in the transformation from a predominantly fossil-based to a renewables-based and resilient energy system. As a framework for action, it addresses all elements of energy transition, from policy and market frameworks to technology options and capacity building. IRENA’s engagement through SIDS LHI encompasses all relevant institutional levels with the aim to foster global policy dialogue, resource mobilisation, implementation of enabling policy and regulatory environment, comprehensive technology roadmapping and tailor-made capacity building and information dissemination on lessons learnt and best practices. Within the overall framework of the Initiative, IRENA strategically engages in partnership with SIDS and development partners to meet SIDS renewable energy targets.
Objectives of the Internship Assignment
The internship post is located in the Country Engagement and Partnerships (CEP) Division within the SIDS Lighthouses Initiative team. The selected candidate will support IRENA activities in relation to the coordination and implementation of the SIDS Lighthouses Initiative work programme in the Atlantic, Indian Ocean and South China Sea (AIS), Caribbean and Pacific Regions as well as provide support in other activities supporting the energy transition of Small Islands Developing States (SIDS), thus achieving the transformation from a predominantly fossil-based to a renewables-based and resilient energy system.
Under the overall guidance of the Head of Partnerships, and the direct supervision of the Programme Officer (P4) – SIDS Lighthouses Initiative, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
Carry out research, data gathering, and analyses related to the priority areas of the SIDS Lighthouses Initiative.
Develop country profiles, support the development of the SIDS knowledge sharing platform that includes the ongoing update of the LHI website and LinkedIn page, development of media and outreach products.
Conduct research on trends, key topics, emerging issues, and initiatives related to energy transition and climate action through renewable energy and energy efficiency interventions in SIDS.
Support the organization and follow-up of workshops, technical and high-level meetings, including preparation of background material as well as the technical and logistical aspects.
Prepare briefings, talking points, presentations and draft correspondences.
Perform any other assigned as and when required.
During the internship period, the successful applicant will develop a deep understanding of the energy transition in SIDS, in particular, the opportunities that renewable energy technologies can offer SIDS, the distinctive challenges that they face and solutions to address the barriers to renewable energy deployment. The intern will gain exposure to the tools and assessments that support the implementation of climate action in SIDS through energy transition and will also be able to further develop their research, analytical thinking, planning, organising and communication skills.
The internship is for a period of six months commencing on/about as soon as possible. The exact period will be determined based on the availability of the intern and the needs of the programme. The maximum duration of the internship is nine months, subject to the intern’s continued university enrolment and performance.

Candidates must have completed an undergraduate degree and be enrolled in a Master’s or doctorate programme at a recognized university at the time of application and for the duration of the internship or have recently graduated and is accepted into the internship programme within six months of their graduation.
The candidate should be aware of and understand energy and/or development economics, climate change and renewable energy technologies. Preference will be given to candidates studying in the fields of renewable energy, climate change, engineering, economics, international development, or other related fields.
The candidate should possess experience of drafting, preparing and reviewing of reports.
Candidates must be able to work in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment.
The candidate should be able to work under tight deadlines, and to demonstrate an ability to multi-task.
Candidates must be fluent in English (both oral and written) and demonstrate excellent writing and communication skills. Other languages e.g. French and Spanish is desirable.
Competencies: Candidates should demonstrate solid teamwork, planning and organizing, professionalism and communications skills.

IRENA internships may be remunerated if an intern is not already sponsored by their government, university or institution. In such cases, the intern is requested to indicate their sponsorship in their cover letter.
The selected intern will work remotely on a full-time basis (40 hours per week) as per the working hours of IRENA premises in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
